Make Your Own Beer – 9 GREAT reasons why you should!
The decision to make your own beer can seem more difficult than it actually is. I have many a friend who has teetered on the edge for years, never quite grasping the opportunity before them. I’ve also known a few with an unenthusiastic spouse.
For those of you who just need a little extra push to get started or maybe some extra ammo to persuade your other half. Here are my top 9 reasons why you should make your own beer.
1 – Save Money when you make your own beer
Let’s start with the obvious. If you are a regular consumer of beer then you will, at some stage, have become frustrated with shelling out fists of cash each time you pick up a case of your favorite sparkling beverage. I am happy to confirm that if you make your own beer you will save a lot of money. I regularly produce high quality beer for around one third of the cost of similar beer from the store.
2 – It’s easier than you think
Any new task in life can be daunting because we have to step into the unknown. Brewing is no exception but I’m happy to report that the learning curve can be as steep or as shallow as you choose to make it. There are so many quick start options available today that it is extremely easy to make your own beer. Most starter kits will come with everything you need to brew your first batch. If you can boil a kettle and use a can opener you have all the skills required to successfully make your own beer.
3 – Impress Your Friends.
Brewing is extremely rewarding as a personal pursuit but when you start receiving compliments from your friends, I’m guessing you’ll be hooked for good. I’m constantly amazed by the number of friends that come out of the woodwork on my All Grain brew days. The promise of sampling my previous beers around a fresh batch of boiling wort is often all that is required for an impromptu get together.
You may not progress to All Grain when you make your own beer, that’s okay, you’ll receive plenty of compliments about your Kit and Extract beers as well.
4 – You Can Customize
This is a highlight when you make your own beer. Why settle for mass produced, bland beer when you can produce a high quality product yourself. Full of all the flavours you like. Do you like a bitter beer? Just boil some extra hops. Like a full, malty flavor? That’s easy too. As your skills and palate develop there is no end to the options available. I know many home brewers who began because they wanted to make a copy of their favorite mainstream beer. Then, as they discovered all the options available, became avid fans of their own craft beer. Make your own beer truly special!
5 – Home Brew Tastes Good
Many prospective brewers have been turned off by memories of home brewing during the second half of last century. Through the 70’s, 80’s and even 90’s there were few ingredients available to home brewers . Yeast strains were often little better than bread yeast and it was difficult to get quality brewing sugar for Kit beers. Leaving most home brewed beer with an unpleasant, cidery twang.
This is no longer the case! The options are almost endless and if you can’t source ingredients locally, you can find everything you want with the click of a button. You can make your own beer extremely tasty from the very first batch!
6 – Health Benefits
Yes, you read that correctly. There are health benefits when you make your own beer. Home brew beer contains almost as many antioxidants as wine. When consumed in moderation your beer will provide similar health benefits to a glass of wine.
Now, I know that we don’t always consume our beer in moderation. Even with the best intentions we will find ourselves having the odd, BIG night among friends. Never fear, your delicious creation contains high levels of vitamin B which will fend off a sore head on the morning after the night before. Yet another reason to make your own beer.
7 – Keep the Traditions Alive
The art of brewing has been handed down through generations. Centuries ago it was not understood how the sugary wort transformed into wonderful, sparkling beer. Each generation added to a communal knowledge base and as that knowledge spread, techniques and ingredients were able to improve and produce the delicious drink we have today. Take your place in history and continue the tradition. You won’t be disappointed.
8 – Increase you Appreciation of Beer
I know many brewers who make the same beer time and time again. They have found a taste they like and stick to it through thick and thin. However, I believe they are in the minority among the brewing community. If you begin to make your own beer you will find that there are endless options. It is likely you will develop an appreciation for many of them. Most mass produced beer lacks both flavor and depth, break away from this mold and you will discover a world of new taste sensations. Citrus, floral, pine, black currant & earthy tones are just some of the revelations you will come across.
9 – Learn the language of Brewers
Hops, malt, yeast, alpha acids, hot break, batch/fly sparge, mash and lauter tuns are just some of the words you will come across as you begin your brewing adventure. If you are completely new to brewing all the new terms can be quite confusing. I’m happy to tell you that as you begin to make your own beer you won’t need to know them. However, as you progressively improve your brewing techniques these phrases will become part of your natural vocabulary. Discussions at your local craft beer establishment will no longer sound like a different language and you have the very real chance of picking up some super advice from the lead brewer. After all, every one likes to talk about their passion, show some interest and it amazing what you will find out.
